Rev. Dr. E. D. McCreary, Jr.

Pastor Emeritus

As a native of Williamsburg, Virginia, Dr. Edward Daniel McCreary, Jr. left the underpining teachings of public school education to embark on a much higher calling in the early 40's.  Dr. McCreary received his Bachelors of Divinity from Andover Newton Theological School in 1943 after receiving his A. B. from Virginia Union University.  Upon reward of his Th. M. in 1945 and Th. D. in 1952 from Union Theological Seminary in Virginia, (now Union / PSCE), he completed a study of Jonathan Edwards, Horace Bushnell and Reinhold Niebuhr, including the major trends in the 18th, 19th, and 20th Century American Theology.  From those studies he birthed his Doctoral Dissertation:  "Representative Views of the Atonement in American Theology".

Dr. Edward McCreary went on to further his education after his Doctoral studies at the University of Chicago, Columbia University, Union Theological Seminary, Mansfield College, and the Vienna Austria Summer School and participated in the Third International Theological Seminar in Hamburg, Berlin and Munich, Germany.  Dr. McCreary upholds education to the highest degree and has exemplified his love for learning through teaching as he served as the Professor of Theology and Philosophy of Virginia Union University; in addition to being an Adjunct Professor at Mt. Holyoke College, University of Richmond, and Virginia Commonwealth University.

The Lord called Dr. McCreary to Pastor the St. John's Baptist Church of Woburn, Massachusetts in the early 1940's, and later to Trinity Baptist Church in Newport News, Virginia.  Dr. McCreary then went on to Pastor the Westwood Baptist Church of Richmond, Virginia from 1946-54 before he was called to Shepherd Mount Carmel from 1954-89.  Now retired, Dr. McCreary serves as Pastor Emeritus of The Mount Carmel Baptist Church.

He is happily married to Dr. Clara S. McCreary and the proud father of Mrs. Edwina Richmond.  Dr. McCreary has published several articles and sermons in professional journals.  A few among many being "Christian Renewal and Man's Responsibility" and "Holy Groceries and the Crisis of Secularism".  He was appointed to serve on the Boards of the State Council of Higher Education, Virginia Power, Maggie L. Walker Historical Foundation, Lewis Ginter Botannical Garden, Commission on Aging, and the Seven Hills Hospital Authority.  Dr. McCreary is also affiliated with the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and the Prince Hall Masons, Order of Eastern Stars.
