Reverend Doctor Stephen Greene Howard was installed as pastor of The Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Richmond , Virginia in May 2004 after accepting the call in July 2003. Pastor Howard is many things to many people. More specifically, he is a husband to his wife, a father to his children, a shepherd to his church family, a preacher among preachers, an accomplished pastor, a leader in his community and a scholar to academia. With many years of pastoral ministry, Pastor Howard remains faithful to serving God which is evident through his unique and energetic preaching styles and pastoral leadership.
During his tenure at Mount CarmelBaptistChurch the discipleship has grown. More than fifteen new ministries have been launched and the church has moved from a single ministry staff to a multi-ministry staff as well as a volunteer staff. The church's budget has increased and an endowment established. In January 2006, he launched the Promised Land Ministries, a 2 .6 million project, geared towards a new Worship and FamilyLifeResourceCenter to be realized in 2011. In 2007, the Carmel Empowerment Incorporation, a 501(c)3 organization, was established.
Dr. Howard has served five churches in his years of ministry. In addition to his ministerial service, Dr. Howard also has served StrayerUniversity as the Associate Professor of Religion Philosophy and Ethics and Visiting Professor of Homiletics at The Baptist Theological Seminary, Paynesville , Liberia .
His undergraduate years were at The Baptist Theological Seminary where he received a Bachelor of Theology degree and a Certificate in Adult Literacy Education. Dr. Howard earned a Masters of Divinity degree from DukeUniversity, Durham, North Carolina and completed four years of clinical pastoral education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina. He also attended Erskine Theological Seminary in the Master of Theology Program, Due West, South Carolina. He earned his Doctor of Ministry Degree in Pastoral Counseling from The Graduate Theological Foundation, South Bend, Indiana and Oxford University Oxford, The United Kingdom of Great Britain. Recently he received a diploma in Pastoral Ministry from the Baptist Theological Seminary Zimbabwe, Southern Africa.
Dr. Howard has traveled extensively throughout North America preaching and holding revival services. His travels to spread the Gospel have not been limited to North America; his international ministries include but are not limited to: Western, Southern and Central Africa; The Netherlands, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, United Kingdom of Great Britain, France, Portugal, Macau, Hong Kong China, Guyana, Venezuela, Haiti, Jamaica, Bahamas, Turkey, Greece, Israel, China and several others. He organizes and leads mission teams to Africa and the Caribbean; as well as educational teams to the Holy Land, Greece and other parts of the World.
He is the writer/author of Clergy to Clergy, a handbook on Pastoral Self Care; Being There, a guide for Hospital Visitation and the ministry of presence; and 10 Reasons Churches are Without among others.
He has served on several boards in the United States and internationally. Through his involvement in the State, national and international Christian organizations, Dr. Howard’s name and that of Mount Carmel is known in many countries around the world.
Dr. Howard is married to Alicia Moniba Howard and they are proud parents of Stephanie Augusta, Stecia Aileen and Sydney Augustyn.
